The United Nations often hits the headlines. You may have seen pictures of heated debates in its Security Council on the evening news. But, you know, there’s much more to the UN than diplomats meeting in grand conference rooms far removed from everyday life.

The United Nations and its agencies are, in fact, like a big family that wants to make the world a better place. For instance, WHO tries to eradicate nasty diseases, FAO and UNDP help farmers grow better crops, UNHCR shelters refugees, UNICEF feeds poor children, UNEP and UNECE protect the environment, and the UN Secretary-General negotiates peace deals. The UN is especially keen to give the children of today – and that includes you – hope for a better future.

Have I piqued your curiosity? Would you like to know more about what the United Nations and its family do to show it cares and how it can make a difference to your life? If so, I invite you on a whistle-stop tour of the UN organizations with the games on this CD. There are jigsaw puzzles, quizzes and much more. So whatever your age, you’re bound to find a game you like.

I trust you’ll have fun on this journey of discovery.

Brigita Schmögnerová,
Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Europe
